111. The Sounds of India

The Sounds of India
Ravi Shankar
1968

Tracks
1. Introduction to Indian Music
2. Dâdrâ
3. Maru Bihag
4. Bhimpalasi
5. Sindhi-Bhairavi

Amanda: Do not be fooled by the track listing; this a long album.  One of the tracks is about a half hour of instrumentals.

Okay, so I usually don't enjoy instrumentals.  They bore me and for some reason there is always something that you are supposed to "get".  Why is that always the case?  What is there to "get" about certain jazz albums or instrumentals?  Instruments are playing songs!  What is there to understand?  Well, anyway, the point before the rant was that I liked this album better than other instrumental ones.  It was very calming and informative; the first track is pretty much pure instructions on ragas.

Ravi Shankar was the hero of the Beatles so you know I have to give it...

RATING: 5/5

  1. The introduction was helpful, apparently they're a power trio. This is wicked, these guys play great. I like the sitar much better than the slide guitar on Call of the Valley.
