952. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Flaming Lips
2002

Tracks
1. Fight Test
2. One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21
3. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1
4. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 2
5. In The Morning Of The Magicians
6. Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell
7. Are You A Hypnotist??
8. It's Summertime
9. Do You Realize??
10. All We Have Is Now
11. Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)

Flaming Lips has been making headlines, as they performed a concert where the audience and musicians were all in separated in plastic bubbles. I have always wanted to go Zorbing, but I don't think a Flaming Lips concert is where I want to make my debut.

So this music sounds different, but not because it is particularly new. It's just nobody's played this style of music since Genesis. But hipsters will enjoy this throwback to prog rock and I'm sure will roll their way to whatever venue Flaming Lips visits.

I guess Flaming Lips is shaping the future of music, and that makes me a little uncomfortable.

859. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Spiritualized
1997

Tracks
1. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
2. Come Together
3. I Think I'm in Love
4. All of My Thoughts
5. Stay with Me
6. Electricity
7. Home of the Brave
8. The Individual
9. Broken Heart
10. No God Only Religion
11. Cool Waves
12. Cop Shoot Cop...

I'm not a big fan of space rock in general, so an hour and a half of this was a little hard to swallow.

That being said, there were a few tracks I liked, like "Home of the Brave" and "Broken Heart." But I get the sense this is designed to be consumed with drugs. Otherwise it's not very interesting.

We had a previous Spacemen 3 album on the List, and I guess they've evolved into this. It doesn't sound that different to me. You can take the space out of the man...or something to that effect.

721. Lazer Guided Melodies

Lazer Guided Melodies
Spirtualized
1992

Tracks
1. You Know It's True
2. If I Were With Her Now
3. I Want You
4. Run
5. Smiles
6. Step into the Breeze
7. Symphony Space
8. Take your Time
9. Shine a Light
10. Angel Sigh
11. Sway
12. 200 Bars

So space rock is once again represented here, and I guess it's supposed to be music for sexy aliens. More accurately, it's probably intended for people who found 2001: A Space Odyssey interesting. I am not one of those people.

I won't be too harsh on this one; it's actually fairly pleasant background music for the most part. You're likely supposed to be passing around a joint while you listen to this, but I guess that is inadvisable during a global pandemic.

The best part of this album is probably the cover.

Okay, who the hell was clamoring for "space rock"?  Honestly, I do not know a single person who has heard of this band let alone liked their music.  But on the plus side, this album is excruciatingly long!

Maybe I am being a bit too harsh; this certainly isn't the worst thing I have ever listened to. Still, it reminded me of Ross' sound from Friends. On a separate, less whiny note, I got stuck in traffic yesterday and if it wasn't for the music I acquired from this blog (such as The Carpenters, David Bowie, and David McLean) I would have suffered from extreme road rage.
