I was under the impression that Either Or would be the dark send off to Elliott Smith, but the Powers That Be decided to include his last album that was released during his lifetime. It's surprisingly cheerful, and I will continue to maintain that his death was a homicide.
So this was an excellent collection of thoughtfully written songs. This album was made after Smith was picked up by a big label. That could have easily meant the lost of Smith's unique sound, but he manages to keep his individuality while still evolving into something different.
I just wish he could have kept evolving.
