It's hard to know what to make of the Beastie Boys. On the one hand, you can admire the sheer range of this album, which pulls in influences from anything to modern hip hop to Middle Eastern music.

But they are also just plain annoying at times, with tracks like "Do It." They do sampling really well though, and that's something. Naturally, they won me over with the lyrics in "Sure Shot": "I want to say a little something that’s long overdue / The disrespect to women has to got to be through / To all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends / I want to offer my love and respect till the end." Needless to say, that is not the kind of message I've come to expect from a hip hop album.

Maybe not as good as License to Ill, but still a pretty quality album.

RATING: 3/5
